Ambadweep, Near Madh (Al De Mar ) Island

India / Maharashtra / Sasti /

There is one dargah on island and no fortifications . See the photograph. Big Madh Island was one of the Arab fortifications conquered from the Sultanate of Khambayat (Cambay) by the Portuguese, and formally ceded by the Treaty of Vasai (Bassein), 1534. Later, when the Marathas invaded the Konkan and conquered the Muslim and Portuguese possessions in 1739, Madh Island too fell to them. The Marathas built the Harbavadevi Temple in the island-fort i.e. Harbadevi Mandir (temple) . A few decades later, the Marathas were forced to cede these territories (the mainland island of Salsette and dependencies) to England in 1774, making them part of the Presidency Province of Bombay, and later of independent India. The Marathas call the island Ambadweep or Ambava Island.
