nature conservation park / area, uninhabited island, artificial island

Man-made island in Hillsborough Bay formed from spoil material when a channel that connects the main Tampa shipping channel to the Alafia River was dredged in the late 1920s. It is privately owned by Cargill Fertilizer, Inc., but remains undeveloped and uninhabited by humans. Cargill leases the island to the Audubon Society of Florida, who operates the Alafia Bank Sanctuary from Sunken Island and neighboring Bird Island.
