Town with a population of 4,168 at the 2000 census. County seat of Washington County. The oldest town in Tennessee, it was founded in 1779 and named for North Carolina legislator Willie Jones. It briefly served as the capital of the State of Franklin, an extra-legal state formed by North Carolinian western settlers, in 1784. Franklin was reintegrated into North Carolina in 1788. The first abolitionist newspaper began to be published here in 1820. Andrew Jackson stayed here in 1788 and according to local legend the ghost of Andrew Jackson still walks through the town.
