Two days short tour of P.G.students of Department of Zoology,Government Vidarbha Institute of Science and Humanities was organized by incharge professor Dr.V.S.Zade and Suresh Andhare on 5th and 6th of September 2009 at Garajdari - a small picturesque tribal village located at the foot of Satpuda mountain range in Chikhaldara tehsil. Students celebrated Teachers day at Garajdari and enjoyed Khirpani waterfall in the outlying region. Similarly in the afternoon they undertook a trek of few miles and enjoyed the scenery of Garajdari Lake from the top of hill. Trekking in the Satpuda is often a mix of adventure, pleasure and self-realisation. All participant lecturers, students of M.Sc., M.Phil and research scholars actively participated in the trek. En route from Garajdari to Amravati we visited Shahanoor Dam. Shahanoor Project in Amravati district, completed in March 1994 at a cost of Rs 48.49 crore.
It is constant endeavor of our Institute to create social awareness and share responsibility for the development of the society. Hence a “Sickle cell Anemia” Detection Camp was also organized by Zoological Society at Garajdari on 6 th September with the Technical assistance of Hon.Shri Sampat Ramteke, Ex-Superintending Engineer WCL,Nagpur and President of Sickle Cell Society of India, Nagpur and its office bearers , free of cost under extension activity of the Department. Hon. Mr. Mohammad Samiullah, Director, Govt.Vidarbha Institute of Science and Humanities, Amravati inaugurated the camp. A team comprising of 50 PG member students of the Zoological Society screened the villagers by using solubility test of blood for Sickle cell under the supervision of Medical Officers and Laboratory technicians of Government Medical College, Nagpur who are the office bearers of Sickle Cell Society of India. Twelve percent villagers of Garajdari were detected as patients of sickle cell anemia in this camp. They were given genetic counseling and advised for further electrophoresis tests and medical aid from government of Maharashtra.
