Hadzhidimovo Monastery “Holy Great Martyr George” (Hadzhidimovo)

Bulgaria / Blagoevgrad / Hadzhidimovo
monastery, listed building / architectural heritage, Bulgarian Orthodox Church

This is the largest monastery complex in the valley of the Mesta River and the third biggest in Southeastern Bulgaria, following the Rila and Rozhen Monasteries. The Monastery was built in 1864. It was completely burned twice. Among the monastery valuables are – the miraculous icon of St. Dimitar, which is dated back to 1750-1800, the iconostasis and the bishop’s throne, reconstructed after an authentic pattern. The “St. Dimitar” Monastery chapel was built in 1979. Its inside decoration is an artistic achievement of Master Kostadin Zlatkov from the town of Gotse Delchev. The holiday of the monastery is celebrated on 6 May (St. George’s day). On this day here are organized fairs and liturgies for health and wellbeing. According to a belief if someone sick stays in the Monastery for a night that person would be healed.
