office building, skyscraper, publishing house, 1969_construction, International style architecture
532-foot, 42-story International-style office building completed in 1969. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons, it is clad in a curtain wall of black steel and bronze-tinted glass. The main entrance is at the center of the west facade on Broadway, with multiple sets of brass-and-glass doors in a bay that is wider than the three bays on either side, each of which has a plate-glass storefront slightly recessed between the piers. On the north facade on 54th Street the ground floor has two more storefront bays, followed by two bays with an entrance and exit to the underground parking garage, and two end bays with loading docks. The south facade on 53rd Street is wider, with eight total bays, the middle two atop a wide, low set of steps and covered by a metal canopy. The four west bays have storefronts, the next bay has a secondary building entrance, more deeply recessed than the storefronts, and the three east bays contain a restaurant space, with an outdoor patio at the southeast corner of the block.
The building sets back on the north, west, and south sides above the 11th floor; a narrow wing at the southeast extends to the east, and also ends at the 11th floor. The center of the east facade is faced in grey-painted concrete with no openings and contains the building core. There is a mechanical floor at the 24th floor, and another at the top, both with black metal vents in place of windows.
The building houses the headquarters of King World Productions and DC Comincs, among other tenants. The ground-floor storefronts are occupied by Oceana Poke restaurant, Pret Coffee Shop, Starbucks Coffee, and a PNC Bank branch.
