One of the very best hot dogs in metropolitan Detroit comes from Chicago: the Vienna Beef hot dog, served here in all its plump and juicy glory. All praise, too, those split Hippo Polish sausages! Lay at the feet of the snap, the bite, the slow burn of a basic Hippo Dog, layered upon layered with mustard, kelly-green relish, onions, fat wedges of tomato, pickle, zippy "sport" pepper and seasonings. That deliriously sloppy, tubular tube is then laid on with a Schwartz Kosher pickle spear, also from Chicago. Ask to have those puppies chargrilled; the steamed are fine, but they don't have that summertime sass or crack. Peruse the overhead menu at the long counter, order and either take your largesse to go or sit at one of the seats at the window. Beverages, chips and so on are strictly help-yourself. Decor is nil: It's all in what's in your basket. Lovingly run by the multi-member Lukas family, Hippo's is a beloved Troy institution.
