Qeqertarsuaq was once a whaling port, and, until 1940, shared with Godthåb the administration of Greenland.

Today Qeqertarsuaq is a center for hunting, fishing and tourism, including dog sledding, hiking and glacier tours. It is home to a campus of the University of Copenhagen.
