Uummannaq lies on an island at the foot of the heart-shaped hill after which the town is named - Uummannaq means 'heart-shaped place'. At this location, 600 kilometers north of the polar circle, winter darkness lasts for two months, but in return the midnight sun extends from mid-May to mid-August.

During the summer season this provides many bright hours for experiencing the land scapes and culture in one of Greenland's northernmost municipalities. Uummannaq boast seven glaciers which results in many huge icebergs in the area.

In the town and the surrounding area, you will also find a museum, several old unique houses and the old winter settlement of Qilakitsoq where Greenland's perhaps most remarkable archaeological find was made. In 1972, the astoundingly preserved mummies of six adults and two children were found that were dated to around 1475. Today, the mummies are on display at the museum in Nuuk.
