The first store to open at the site of the Oakland Mall was Sears, which opened in 1965. In 1968, the mall itself opened, featuring Hudson's, Wrigley Supermarket, and S. S. Kresge. Wrigley Supermarket was later converted to J. C. Penney in the late 1970s. This store was torn down for a northern expansion, which opened in 1980. This new wing, unlike the original mall, was two stories, featuring a new J. C. Penney store and a movie theater.
In 1987, S. S. Kresge closed and was replaced with smaller stores. A food court was added to the mall in the late 1990s, replacing a former combination Burger King/Godfather's Pizza. Borders opened in the late 1990s. The movie theaters were closed in 2000 and were later converted to Steve & Barry's. Hudson's was converted to Marshall Field's in 2001. In 2004, Lord & Taylor was proposed to become the mall's fourth department store; however, the store never materialized.September 2006 saw the conversion of Marshall Field's (and other May Co. nameplates) to the Macy's name.
