A subpost of Fort Winfield Scott. Acquired by purchase in 1901 and designated the Lake Merced Military Reservation. Redesignated 26 June 1917 in honor of Maj. Gen. Frederick Funston, Medal of Honor recipient and captor of Emilio Aguinaldo during the Philippine Insurrection. The original cantonment area, plus Batteries Bruff and Walter Howe, were located where the Ocean Water Pollution Control Plant is now located.

Formerly home to a caretaking detachment, 6th Coast Artillery from 1924 to 1941, the 4th Battalion, 6th Coast Artillery in 1941, and the 2nd Battalion, 18th Coast Artillery in 1941.

This is a very large free range dog park. No fences with beach access. During summer months, there are easily over 200 dogs here.

Also a major hang gliding location.
