It is located on the Isle of Dogs, with Canary Wharf to the North-west, to the north, Blackwall, and to the west, Millwall. It is named after William Cubitt, who was Lord mayor of London, from 1860-1862. He developed the area in the 1840s to 1850s to provide housing for the workers who worked in the nearby factories and docklands. It is part of the E14 postal district, and part of the 0208 dialing district.
