During the different periods of the year, 114 species of birds have been identified in Konush Reservoir, of which 21 species are included in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria (1985). Of the species found, 42 are of European conservation importance. 3 species are included as globally endangered, and 9 species as endangered in Europe. The reservoir is a place of international importance because of the small cormorant, which is found here during migration and in winter. Individual pairs of small cormorants stay here until late spring, so it is very likely that they will remain nesting if they are not disturbed and chased. Two other globally endangered species are also found in the reservoir - the White-eyed Pelican (during migration) and the Dalmatian Pelican (in winter). Here is one of the largest colonies in the country of night heron and little egret. The Konush Reservoir is one of the important places in the country important for the European Union for the protection of these two species. Here is concentrated one of the most important wintering populations of the short-winged woodpecker, as well as representative populations of the great white egret and the mallard duck (in winter).
