This area has been the most popular local rock climbing area since the late 1920s or early '30s, (with very few deaths, mostly by untrained adventurers). The Mountaineering and the Rescue sections of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (Vienna, Virginia) conduct frequent outings for fun and safety training. The main climbing area consists of an 800' foot long granite/quartzite/schist palisade, providing several hundred defined routs of a wide variety of difficulty, up to about 65', and there are a half dozen smaller 1-10 route areas within walking distance (see www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States... Several excellent rock-climbing guides are available thru the club and retail book stores. There are, however, frequent injuries, and use of the cliffs are strongly discouraged without close and experienced supervision. Several of the less used cliff-top areas are unstable.

  • This must not be confused with the other "Carderock Park", just inside the beltway in Cabin John. (see http://maryland.hometownlocator.com/maps/feature-map,ftc,2,fid,1713102,n,carderock%20park.cfm)
