Great Falls is a dramatic natural sight in the Washington area. It is a park operated by the National Park Serivce with trails and overlooks on both the Virginia and Maryland sides of the Great Falls of the Potomac River. Both sides of the river have trails and excellent views of the falls and of Mather Gorge. The Virginia side has a visitor center and picnic areas. Trails upriver in Virginia pass the reservoir water source for D.C. and the Potomac crossing of the Transcontinental Natural Gas Pipeline.
