Historical Background:
Kampung Buah Pala was an Indian village, claimed to have been built about 150 years ago when the British East India Company brought in Indian workers. Its villagers were plantation workers and cattlemen. It was a microcosm of the Indian immigrant community.
In 2004, the land was sold by the state government for a redevelopment project. This project was opposed by the residents and Indian associations. After a protracted battle involving the villagers, the media, the court and various political and non-political parties, the village was finally demolished on September 1, 2009.
