  • From the south side it is possible to see the Water Tower in Shooter's Hill, between Welling and Greenwich. West Kingsdown boasts a Windmill, although it has been in various states of decay and restoration in the 50+ years that I have known it. The number of windmills surviving in Britain is now fewer than 100. Another point of interest close-by is in the hamlet of Maplescombe. The half-brother of William the Conqueror, Bishop Odo, is credited with the building of a chapel—situated at the bottom of Botsam Lane. Little remains of the structure today, although there was substantially more to be seen in the days of my youth. A working party could do much to restore this rapidly disappearing piece of Kentish history.
