  • The old Greenville Bridge was one of the most dangerous spots for rivermen, due to the narrow channel and swift current. The river bottom under and below the bridge is said to be littered with the remains of many towboats and barges. One of them was the Motor/Vessel "Peace", which sank after trying to hold position above the bridge for an upbound tow in the early 90s. After 45 minutes, the engines couldn't take the stress anymore, and a connecting rod blew out through the hull, sending the approx. 23 year old, 168-foot boat to the bottom.
