Jackson Square (New Orleans, Louisiana)

USA / Louisiana / Gretna / New Orleans, Louisiana
park, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic town square, U.S. National Historic Landmark

Site of General Andrew Jackson's rally before the Battle of New Orleans, Dec 18, 1814.

Before France sold the Louisiana Territory the square was called Place d' Armes.

This is where the formal flag lowering/raising ceremony between the U.S. and France was held, and it was followed by the first rifle volley in salute of the American flag in what was the Louisiana Purchase.

The design of Jackson Square was modeled on the famous Place des Vosges in Paris, France. The square was originally designed by architect and landscaper Louis H. Pilié, although he is only given credit for the iron fence.

Once again, kudos to my previous poster for highlighting this (the most expensive, prominent and important) piece of real estate in New Orleans, possibly Louisiana. I wanted to add that this was the original 'town square', with the Governor's house on the right of the St. Louis Cathedral and later, the Presbytere on the left. The Baroness Pontalba built (with much history behind it) the country's first apartment buildings flanking Jackson Square, which are now owned, one by the state and one by the city. Ironically, the one owned by the city was renovated some time back, while the state-owned property remains in almost original condition, with tenants having to bring nearly everything (stoves, air conditioners, etc.,) with them. Many artists, performers and musicians make their living daily in the Square plying their trade. Weddings and masses are still held at the beautiful Saint Louis Cathedral, where tours are given daily.

Dan Aykroyd (impersonating then-President Jimmy Carter) sat on the statue on General Jackson to open the Saturday Night Live Mardi Gras special back in 1977.
