Hotel Dieu served El Paso and surrounding communities for almost a century until El Paso found itself with 800 too many hospital beds, and the Sisters sold the medical center on December 5, 1987. The building stood at the corner of Stanton and Rio Grande Streets and was rented out to various tenants for office space. Small medical practices came and went, and the empty building, named the Landmark and owned by the county. Demolished, now just a big land lot in Central El Paso.

  • Where I can I get past records of Hotel Dieu patients?
  • Hallo, my name is Angelica Lopez and I am married to Albert Lopez jr. He was born in Hotel Dieu-sisters Hospital on May 4th 1968. His fathers name was Albert Lopez Sr and his mothers name was Tomasita Rojio married to Albert Lopez Sr. They came out of Mexico on a visit and were on there way back to Arizona when his mother went into labor and delivered Albert Lopez jr, my husband. We obtained his birth certificate but because it wont tell him his weight and his length he has it set in his mind that he was really adopted. How can we find out, his 5 sisters and brothers told him they were there when he was born but he still believes he was adopted because his one year older brother was also adopted. please help us. I need information how to research this and set his mind at ease. he cant understand why his birth certificate wouldn't tell him how much his weight was or his length. Thank you for your time, you can reach us at Angelikaaz@aol.com
  • Hi Angelica and Chris, I am the archivist for Fabens Cemetery (not Our Lady of Guadalupe cemetery or La Isla). And I came across Hotel Dieu on a death certificate. Angelica, I hope you do not mind I wanted to help you out a bit so I searched for your husband on ancestry.com and found him listed on the Texas Birth Index from 1903-1997. Albert Sr. and Tomasita are both indeed listed as his mother and father. I hope this helps. Also, the reason for all of my research in the first place is because all of the cemtery's records were lost when they were handed over to a city representative (county commissioner? I apologize that I cannot recall exactly who the documents were given to), but if this is the case for our cemetery, it may also be the case for the hospital files. Unfortunately, when older hospitals are demolished or sold, a lot of material can be left behind and thus lost. However, I would try searching at the El Paso Historical Society or with the city archives.

  • I was born at Hotel Dieu Hospital on 9/5/1959 at 9/15AM Saturday. Instead of them making a Historical Site the City of El Paso or the Diocese tore it down. This move was and is unfortunate. I still have my original Birth Certificate.

  • I am looking for any information regarding any births in August of 1971 of a male child that might have been adopted. Please contact me at rt05_3@yahoo.com
  • Everyone posting on here should contact the El Paso County Clerk's Office for birth records -- Wikimapia does not have the information you seek, and the likelihood of someone with access to birth record information stumbling onto this website is -very- small.
  • A beautiful and historic site. I was born here July 22,1942.
  • I was born there. It's sad that it is gone.
  • Try having your adoption records opened, go to the El Paso county website and there is a link for "adoption" records, there is a process but when I started my process I didn't need a lawyer. Your other best bet is to get your DNA tested. I used ancestry and was able to verify my relatives.
  • I was born there 1952
  • I was born there in 1961 and for some reason searched for a photo of the place. Sorry to hear it's gone, but understandable. Mom said the people there were very caring. All came out well, pun intended.
  • I was born there too. 75 yrs ago.
  • My sister was born there too. I found her by contacting the salvation army maternity booth in long beach. All records from El Paso was sent there. It's a $100 to get the records.
  • I was born there in 57 as was sis in 59. Sorry to hear such a reverant health institution has been removed from EP history. Much good was done there as I had always heard in my youth growing up there.
  • I was born there 79 years ago.
  • You have to go to the Catholic Dioceses is what I was informed.
  • My husband was born there in 1944 and until he was a grown man thought he was actually born in a "Hotel"...
  • I was born there in 58. We left when I was around three years old. I went back to check the hospital out and found that it was gone. And the house I lived in on East Rio Grande Ave was now a parking lot for a church. Seem like El Paso wiped my past there of the map.
  • My husband was also born there. He was adopted and his birth record is also misleading. He recently found a medical bracelet with his birthdate and the name hotel dieu. We also don't know where to find records...
