massacre, historical layer / disappeared object
Site of the Porvenir Massacre of 1918, when Texas Rangers took 15 men and boys out of their homes before shooting them in a nearby hillside. The village was immediately abandoned by the surviving residents, who fled to Pilares, a Mexican village just across the border. The U.S. Army subsequently razed the uninhabited village.
