Until 2005 an elevated highway, named for a local civil rights activist, was in use here. This highway carried US 17 from the Crosstown up to the Pearman and Grace bridges. Local residents saw the expressway as dividing their neighborhood in two, not to mention the fact that illegal activities often took place in the dark corners under the highway. Once it was torn down, several blocks of real estate suddenly became available; no word yet on what will be built here.
