Radcliffeborough is a neighborhood on the Charleston peninsula that consists of the areas between Radcliffe Street to the north, Calhoun Street to south, King Street to the East, and Rutledge Avenue to west as well as the land to south of Bee Street, East of Ashley Avenue, west of Rutledge and north of Calhoun. It originally began as farmland purchased and surveyed in 1786 by Thomas Radcliffe and consisted of the blocks bound by Vanderhorst, King, Radcliffe, and Smith streets. In 1806, Thomas Radcliffe was lost at sea on his way back from Jamaica. Radcliffe’s widow, Lucretia, continued the development of the area after his death.
