The Battle of Plataea (ancient Greek: Battle of Plataea) held in August 479 BC between the Greeks and the Persians, during the second Persian invasion of Greece.

In 480 BC, the Persians won at Thermopylae and Artemisium, but the Greeks answered with victory at Salamis. Xerxes retreated, then in Asia, leaving 300,000 men to Mardonius as leader. In 479 BC, the Greeks gathered a large army and fought against the Persians at Plataea. Although they were numerically fewer, the Greeks attacked and destroyed the Persian army. Mardonius fell in battle.
The victory at Plataea was accompanied by the great Greek victory against the Persian fleet at Mycale. The battles at Plataea and Mycale very significant because it eliminated the Persian threat and why after these, the Greeks resumed the offensive, until they expire conflicts in 450 BC.
