  • I visited there to help band cormorants with a friend who has since become [and retired as] a professor of ornithology. There were remnants of structures there that appeared to have been dome-shaped dwellings...all that remained were frameworks made of whalebone...there were midden heaps associated with each 'dwelling'. I was not skilled enough then (in my 20's) to know what I was doing, and I took and oval object that appeared to have been a knife blade made of petrified bone. It is still in my possession. My friend and I were stationed at the 'Airbase' at Northeast Cape. The mountain behind that site had the appearance of a small blown-out volcano. I have pictures of the area if anyone's interested.
