Site of the national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Lab (DUSEL).
This marks the boundaries of the approximately 186 surface acres donated by the last owners of the Homestake Gold Mine for use as underground science and engineering laboratories. Work is already underway (2009) with contracts already let for upgrading the Yates Shaft down to the 4850 foot level. Some additional project funding has come from the State of South Dakota with follow-on funding from the National Science Foundation and other sources.
