William R Bradfield Homestead

Homesteaded about 1906 by William Riley Bradfield who came from Lincoln County, SD with his wife Ruby and her brother Frank J Gage. The entire homestead eventually included approximately 345.07 acres and lies entirely inside the boundaries of what is now the Badlands National Park. Frank J Gage homesteaded the quarter section adjoining the Bradfield homestead to the immediate East.

The homestead comprised:

The South half of the Northeast quarter of Section 2 in Township 3 South of Range 16 East of the Black Hills Prime Meridian, South Dakota.

The Northeast quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section 2 in Township 3 South of Range 16 East of the Black Hills Prime Meridian, South Dakota. (Lot 1)

The Northwest quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section 2 in Township 3 South of Range 16 East of the Black Hills Prime Meridian, South Dakota. (Lot 2)

The above three parcels total 149.66 acres.

In a later grant the homestead also included:

The East half of the Southwest quarter of Section 1 in Township 3 South of Range 16 East of the Black Hills Prime Meridian, South Dakota.

The Northeast quarter of the Northwest quarter of Section 2 in Township 3 South of Range 16 East of the Black Hills Prime Meridian, South Dakota. (Lot 3)

The Northeast quarter of the Northwest quarter of Section 12 in Township 3 South of Range 16 East of the Black Hills Prime Meridian, South Dakota.

The Northwest quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section 12 in Township 3 South of Range 16 East of the Black Hills Prime Meridian, South Dakota.

The above four parcels total 195.41 acres.
