Brazoira is one of the oldest communities in Texas. It was established 1828 by John Austin on land he acquired from Stephen F. Austin. It served as the county seat for Brazoria County from about 1890 to 1897, when the county seat was moved to Angleton.

The original townsite, located on the west bank of the Brazos River and locally known today as "Old Brazoira," is easily recognized today by the orientation of its streets which run perpendicular and parallel to the river.

Shortly after the turn of the 20th Century, the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway Company constructed a railroad line south of the original townsite, and Old Brazoria fell into decline as residents moved closer to the railroad. In the years since, the two communities have merged into the City of Brazoria.

St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway Company merged with Missouri Pacific Railroad Company in 1956, which in turn marged with the Union Pacific in 1997. The railroad operates today as the Union Pacific.
