This 10 meter wide circular grill caps a shaft that goes down to the tunnels of Chicago's Deep Tunnel Project, now called the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. By dropping rocks, I estimated that this shaft is about 100 meters deep (takes about five seconds to fall).
If it has rained recently, the shaft will be full to the level of the river.
