fortification, star fort
The 25-hour bombardment of this fort by British naval forces during the War of 1812 was the basis of the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner.
The fort was built after the Revolutionary War to protect the port of Baltimore and named after James McHenry, Secretary of War under George Washington.
It replaced a previous earthen fort called Fort Whetstone.
At the time of the famous battle, all the post buildings were one-story so they would not be in direct line of fire of attacking warships. After the war, second-story additions were made to the barracks and others buildings inside the fort.
