Owned by Morton Salt of Chicago, the Canadian Salt Co. was founded in 1893 when 3 CPR employees commenced operations where the CPR met the Detroit River (presently occupied by the CBC). One of two Windsor plants, the Prospect evaporation plant pumps brine from a depth of 1400 ft. and 1500 ft. to the surface where salt is extracted through an evaporation process.
