This used to be a developed residential area, but it was bought out via eminent domain and the houses were torn down because the area is in the flight path of the San Jose Airport. For a while, the old house foundations, driveways and roads remained, but most of that has now been bulldozed as well.

  • as of late 2019, and increasingly in 2021, "homeless" populations have sprung up in the area (particularly between Hedding and Asbury). These populations are quite innovative, building a vast number of large tarp and plywood fortifications. They utilize water from nearby public utilities, have large open fires for cooking, and live like urban tribal people. Estimated between 20-80 short term or long term residents based on observations.
  • 2021 August 10th update - several attempts to clear the encampments have occurred, but their success is yet to be determined. See https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2021/08/04/san-jose-to-begin-clearing-massive-airport-homeless-camp/ Some locals estimate the homeless population to be as much as 600 people, but this is likely an exaggeration. Field estimates for population range between 50-100 people.
