Originally established as a military reserve by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe, the park was used for military purposes until the 1860s. In 1794 Simcoe ordered the construction of a blockhouse as part of a proposed naval arsenal which was never built. Later the site was occupied by a small star-shaped fort and barracks.
Utilized for park purposes after outliving it's military usefulness the 11.5 ac. site contains Jaycee Gardens and a bandshell designed by famed architect J.W. Storey. A recently approved Master Plan is designed to guide the future modernization of the park.
