Built in 1848, Fort Vuren was constructed as part of the Dutch Waterline defense system in which vast tracts of land (below sea level) were purposely flooded to impede attacks by invading armies. Like many other forts of this type, Fort Vuren as well as Castle Loevestein, across the river, were built to prevent the enemy from advancing westward along the river Waal
