Although barely recognizable as the fort it once was, Fort Crevecoeur latest complete renovation took place from 1858-1860. The area has been the site of defensive positions since as early as the 1590's but it wasn't until 1599 that the conquering Spaniards erected a true fort in the form of seven bastions.

There are plans to completely restore the fort.
