In 1277 the regent Floris V ordered to be made a polder of the moor-area between river 'Lek' and 'Merwede' and make it ready for cattle-breeding. Around the year 1356 the whole area that currently covers the Alblasserwaard was poldered.

Disaster and floodings
In the past centuries the Alblasserwaard was frequently ravaged by adversity and flooding; Like the St Elizabeth floodings in 1421; one of the biggest disasters in Dutch history, where several villages were swept away by the rushing water.
