The former Benedictine monastery was founded in the early 12th century by Prince Vladislav I. The current appearance of the area comes from the third of the 18th century. The dominant feature of the area is the monastery basilica, originally Romanesque, rebuilt in Baroque Gothic style Giovanni Blasio Santini. He also designed most of its interior. The interior was also involved by sculptors Asam brothers and Charles Legat. On the south side of the church is situated an old convent with the old praelatura.On the south stands the new convent, which authorship is attributed to Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer.
In 1393 was in case of the vindication of the new abbot of Kladruby martyred Saint John Nepomuk.
