This cross-wind runway is now used only sparingly, mostly for the departure of the 747-400 to Tokyo, although that flight frequently uses 17/35. Construction of a tunnel is going on for ground traffic.

  • As the 1968 movie "Airport" was filmed at this facility, it shouldn't be a surprise that the constant bickering between pilot Dean Martin and "Lincoln" (as the airport was fictiously renamed) tower for use of runway two-niner instead of two-two for his crippled 707 refers to this runway as being "too short". In 1968, that was true. Two-niner (now called three-zero left) was longer at the time.
