`La Vita e Una Fontana' or `Life is a Fountain' - Dec. 1, 1991, by Salvatore Pecoraro

Salvatore Pecoraro taught at De Anza College for 33 years. He's also the artist responsible for the Sunken Garden fountain titled `La Vita e Una Fontana' (Life is a Fountain). He retired from full-time teaching in 1996, and left the profession entirely in 2001. He began a printmaking program for the college, aside from teaching, the drawing, airbrush and watercolor classes.

The 71-ton fountain was a challenge for Pecoraro. Before any cement could be poured, the fountain had to be designed and presented to the Board of Trustees. The problem was, De Anza soon found itself in a financial crisis. "They had already paid at least 80 percent of the cost by the time the crises started... The piece cost $75,000, and a good 65 percent went into materials," Pecoraro said.
