Second World War 1939-1945, place with historical importance, abandoned / shut down, POW camp, closed
Stalag Luft I was a German military-run World War II prisoner-of-war camp built near Barth, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, for captured Allied airmen. The presence of the prison camp is said to have shielded the town of Barth from Allied bombing. Approximately 9,000 Allied Airmen ( 7,588 American and 1,351 Royal Air Force) were imprisoned by the Germans at Stalag Luft I. The camp was liberated the night of April 30, 1945 by Russian troops.
