Airfield Oranienburg was built between 1936 and 1939. Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke A.G. used it untill 1945 for the construction and testing of hundreds of fighter planes and bombers. The German jet-powered fighter aircraft "Horten Ho IX V2" had its first test flight at Flugplatz Oranienburg. The airfield was heavily bombed by the Americans in April 1945. Werkflugplatz Oranienburg was reused by the Red Army after the war and eventually abandoned in the '90s.
