Brașovia Citadel was a fortification located on the top of Tâmpa mountain in Brașov, Transylvania, Romania. It was demolished until the beginning of 1455(1448-1453) from the order of Iancu de Hunedoara.
Cetatea Brașovului or Brașovia Citadel is a historical and architectural monument of XIII-XIV-XVth centuries classified on the historical monuments list.
The fortress sits on top of Tampa and in the Middle Ages was the most important point of defense for the area.
The fortification occupies an area of about 23,000 square meters, with high and thick walls of 1.70 to 1.80 m.
First, the citadel is mentioned in a document dated October 16, 1434. Dominance of Tampa, isolation and slope gradients made from Brasov citadel a imposible to conquered fortress and also the "key" to rule the city. The natural environment where has been raised is one of the most favorable places for such constructions: in two parts, the citadel is flanked by steep coasts, and the third is bounded by a steep slope with opportunities for fortification.
The construction's architecture is simple, making the assumption that the fortress belongs to the pre-Romanesque era.
