A market town that can trace its origins back to the 13th century. The town was made famous during the English Civil Wars when it became a stronghold for parliamentarian forces lead by John Hampden; his silhouette is used on the District Council's emblem. The town was declared the County Town for Buckinghamshire by Henry VIII in 1529.
