Sidney was the junction between the Great Northern Railway, from the north,
and the Northern Pacific Railway, which entered from the south.
Both railways merged in 1970 to form Burlington Northern, now known as BNSF Railway.

The rail line through Sidney is operated by the Yellowstone Valley Railroad,
which is leasing the line from BNSF.
