1936-1937, Art Deco apartment building at 1150 Grand Concourse, New York, NYC, USA. Architect: Horace Ginsbern & Marvin Fine.
This striking Art Deco apartment house—familiarly known as the Fish Building—takes its name from the colorful aquatic mosaic over the main entrance. The lively mural of tropical fish, sea anemones, and abstract marine forms brings a touch of undersea fantasy to the Bronx’s Grand Concourse.
The entrance is framed by coffered cast stone with green circular inserts and a sleek horizontal canopy, leading into a round lobby with a terrazzo floor in red, green, and gold tones. Two original murals by René and C.P. Graves adorn opposite walls.
The six-story, E-shaped building features buff brick with brown horizontal bands and angled bays with rounded corner windows—classic hallmarks of the late-Deco / Moderne era.
Designated part of the Grand Concourse Historic District in 1987, the Fish Building remains one of New York’s most whimsical and beloved Art Deco treasures.
