The neighborhood takes its name from the bridge built in the 1800s to carry water across the Harlem River. It is a mainly residential area, within walking distance to Yankee Stadium which lies to the south. To the north lie the Alexander Hamilton Bridge and Washington Bridge, which link the Bronx and Manhattan. Once a predominately Irish neighborhood, African Americans and Dominicans make up the majority of the present day population of High Bridge.

In March 2007, a fire broke out at 1022 Woodycrest Avenue, killing several people. It was one of the worst fires in the Bronx since the 1970s.
