Captain Marion Eppley was the founder of the Eppley Foundation for Research and the Eppley Laboratory of Newport, R.I.. A noted expert in physical chemistry Captain Eppley served in the Navy in both world wars.

The Eppleys hired the noted architect William Lawrence Bottomely to renovate a house on the site originally built in 1790 and owned by the Sidney McCoun family. Bottomley moved the house back from the shore, joined several smaller outbuildings to it and refaced the home in brick creating an attractive Dutch Colonial design. The home survives with few alterations since the work done by Bottomely.
