C.J. Jones Lumber Mill (site)

USA / Florida / Plantation Island /
site - to be removed, lumber merchant

This is the approximate site of the C.J. Jones Lumber Mill, which was constructed in 1940 to keep up with the demand for lumber. Originally built by Conrad Jones, this was one of the largest-producing lumber sites during World War II, which also created "pressure-treated" wood that was dipped in creosote to harden and strengthen the wood for use as railroad ties and building construction. Rail lines were also created to transport the cypress trees back to the mill, which had to be raised due to the wet and swampy land.

By the mid-1950s, much of the area was becoming deforested, so the land was sold, and the mill was dismantled. In late-1956/57, the mill burned down, but one of the creosote vats had exploded, causing the tarry substance to leech into the soil.
