Monroe County is a county located in the state of Florida, and includes the islands of the Florida Keys. As of 2000, the population was 79,589. Its county seat is Key West, Florida. Named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, who served from 1817 to 1825.

Almost all of the population of Monroe County is in the Keys. Mainland Monroe, the part of the county on the peninsula, is mostly protected Everglades, and occupied by Everglades National Park. It has 86.9 percent of the county's land area, but only 0.075 percent of its population (60 out of 79,589). This makes mainland Monroe County one of the least densely-populated areas of the United States.
