Volusia County was established by the Florida State Legislature in 1854 from lands formerly part of Orange County (at the time, historically known as Mosquito County). Its western border is the St. Johns River and the lakes along the river's course, such as Lake George and Lake Monroe. To the east it is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, except for small geometric outcroppings on its north and south ends which have eastern borders with Flagler County and Brevard County, respectively.
Name Origin:
Volusia County takes its name from the small trading post and port settlement of Volusia along the St. John's River just south of Lake George on the county's western side. The town of Volusia was one of the earliest settlements on the Florida peninsula, and was the largest town in the newly established county, when it was formed. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings set her 1939 Pulitzer Prize-winner "The Yearling" in and near Volusia township. As for where the town got the name "Volusia", the origins of the word are unclear. There are several plausible theories, but none for which proof has been established.
Volusia County is home to 16 incorporated cities and towns, the most well-known of which is the city of Daytona Beach.
County Seat: DeLand
Largest city: Deltona
County Area: 1106 sq. mi. (2865 km. sq.); 10th largest county in Florida.
